Mold Test Kits
Fungal/mold testing is conducted to: (1) avoid structural building damage
that can accompany mold growth; and (2) detect mold species growth that may
harm human and pet health. In addition to being the cause for many serious
diseases, fungi have the potential to produce allergens, irritants, and in
some cases potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins), which can induce an
allergic response, cause asthma attacks, and irritate the eyes, skin,
throat, and lungs of individuals exposed who elevated indoor levels of mold
infestation.
When you are using mold test kits, fill out a “Chain of Custody” lab form that records the test number,
precise testing location (e.g., “west living room wall”), and property
address for each mold sample taken. That same information should be written
on an adhesive label that you attach (after writing the above details) to
the bottom of each Petri dish. You can print out a Chain of Custody form
from the website
http://www.moldmart.net.
The original Chain of Custody, or a clear
photocopy thereof, must accompany any Petri dishes that you send to a mold
lab for mold species identification and quantification.
Specimen Collection: It is important to take proper cautions when testing
areas have or might have elevated levels of mold spores and/or mold growth.
To limit your health exposure to mold and mold spores, it is recommended
that while mold testing an area potentially contaminated with fungi that one
should wear a N-95 respirator mask, disposable vinyl gloves (buy at a
pharmacy), and eye goggles with no breathing holes for mold spores to
enter---use chemsplash type of goggles available at a safety store or a
large hardware or home improvement store.
Use a one inch wide by two inches long piece of clear Scotch tape to
press against visible mold growth or surfaces you wish to test (such as
inside a heating/cooling duct register). Then peel off the tape sample and
press the sample into the top surface of your mold test kit. You can leave the
tape in place on the surface of the Petri dish to learn whether mold
colonies grow from that lift tape inoculation over the following 7 days.
This is known as “lift tape sampling”. You can read more about how to do
lift tape sampling in the mold lab analysis section of
http://www.moldmart.net.
Test the outward air flow from heating/cooling duct registers by taping
an open mold test kit (with the sticky malt agar material facing the outward
air flow from the heating/cooling system). After taping the dishes to as
many ducts you want tested, then run the heating/cooling system for just 10
minutes on fan ventilation (no heating or cooling happening). Then remove
the Petri dishes, and tape the lid to each dish.
